Online Betting – A New Legal Way To Enjoy Online Gambling
Online betting is any type of betting conducted over the internet with no face-to-face interaction. This includes casinos, virtual poker and online sports betting amongst others. In 1994, the first online betting venue open to the public, was ticket sales for the first ever Liechtenstein International Poker tournament. The event raised over US$ 8 million and paved the way for online betting to grow into a global phenomenon.
Many other online betting site have since grown and operated successfully. The most popular is the World Wide Web Casino, which allows players from across the globe to log into a virtual casino and place bets on any type of gambling game with the chance of earning cash or prizes. A wide variety of online betting sites are available from the comfort of your home or office. Some of these include Ladbrokes, Playtech, Interval Sports, Betfair and UK lottery portal. All major financial and online gaming companies operate betting sites and many of these are based in the US.
Virtual casinos and sportsbooks are operated directly by licensed banks such as Interbank Debit and Trust Company (IDStc), which control and supervise the operations. Internet gambling has been illegal in several states since the mid-1990s including Nevada, though the law is now moot in some states including Illinois, California and New Jersey. Recently however, the United States Supreme Court has ruled that states cannot ban online gambling, even if the law is intended to ban all online gambling. Since the ruling the only state that allows gambling without license is Oregon. In 2021 a bill was introduced in Congress to legalize online gaming, but it has yet to gain support from both houses of Congress.
