Types of Sports Betting

There are many different types of betting in sports. While straight bets are placed on the outcome of an individual game, futures and teasers are bets on future events. A futures bet is a bet placed on a future event, such as a championship game. For basketball or football games, there are teasers offered that adjust the posted pointspread.

The combined score of both teams may land right on the predicted total. For example, if the combined score is 34-32, the total will be 66. This is known as a “push” or “tie.” This is because the sportsbooks usually set the total at half of what it predicts, such as 66.5. Therefore, 66 would be an underdog, while 67 is an overdog.

Another type of bet is the accumulator. These bets are based on a combination of different events, such as a game’s total points. Often, the bettor will place a bet on both teams scoring in order to win the accumulator. Depending on the betting system, hedging can involve futures bets, halftime bets, and in-game wagering.

If the point spread changes rapidly, you can place a “steam” bet. This is a bet on a team that you think is going to win by winning its next game. The point spread is an important factor in determining which games are worth betting on. Pointspreads are offered at 11 to 10 odds. That means that if a favored team wins by a certain number of points, the player will win $21.
